SUMMARY:‘Sociology of Science and Technology’ at the 3rd ISA Forum of Sociology
DESCRIPTION:The WebForum is an experimental space for intellectual debate on the broadly conceived theme “The Futures We Want: Global Sociology and the Struggles for a Better World” and other matters of interest to the ISA’s Research Committees\, Working Groups\, Thematic Groups. It will feature cutting-edge contributions on forward-oriented sociology\, on the pertinent trends\, risks\, and opportunities of our time\, on scenarios of probable\, possible\, preventable\, or preferable futures. It is a virtual sphere for sharing thoughts on empirical\, theoretical\, and normative research across geographic\, linguistic\, and disciplinary boundaries.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Third ISA Forum will be convened in Vienna\, Austria\, 10-14 July 2016 on the theme “The Futures We Want: Global Sociology and the Struggles for a Better World.” This theme encourages a forward-orientation in empirical\, theoretical\, and normative research to tackle the problems and opportunities that often cut across borders. \nProtests around the globe have challenged inequality\, oppression\, and ecological destruction\, and have insisted on the possibility of another\, better world. Intensifying uncertainties demand innovations in methods and theories. Tomorrow no longer appears as pre-determined by inevitable trends but as a rather contingent outcome of complex\, typically multi-scalar dynamics that vary in their intensity of contentiousness. Social actors aspire\, desire\, envision\, expect\, fear\, imagine\, plan\, project\, reject\, sustain\, and wage war over futures. What can sociology contribute to these broader debates? How do assumptions and aspirations about the future influence daily routines and long-term collective lives? How are risks identified\, avoided\, mitigated\, transferred\, or shared? What closes and opens the horizons of social imaginaries? How are different forces positioned to shape futures? How can the making of futures be democratized? What can be learned by comparing struggles in different countries and settings? How do emancipatory movements and everyday practices at the grassroots overcome discipline\, exploitation\, and misrecognition? What visions for alternative futures are imaginable\, desirable\, and achievable? What are viable roadmaps for social transformation? \nThis general theme provides a platform for dialog among ISA’s many participating Research Committees (RCs)\, Working Groups (WGs)\, and Thematic Groups (TGs). It calls for research on the full range of sociological topics from the tiny worlds of micro situations to the broad macro dynamics affecting the entire planet. It encourages inquiries into the multiplicity of possibilities\, projects\, and visions. It welcomes diverse approaches\, including comparative and interdisciplinary collaborations.

This event is organized every three years. The last such event\, the sixth AASW and FARA GA\, was held in Accra\, Ghana in July 2013. \nThe overall theme of the 7th African Agriculture Science Week and FARA GA: is “Apply Science\, Impact Livelihoods”. The program of the Science Week is organized around the following five key sub-themes: 1. Institutional systems and policies for making science work for African agriculture; 2. Sustainable productivity growth\, value chains and profitable agribusinesses; 3. Human capital development and the Youth; 4. Sustainable financing of Science\, Technology and Innovation for African agriculture; and 5. DESCRIPTION:FORCE11 is a community of scholars\, librarians\, archivists\, publishers and research funders that has arisen organically to help facilitate the change toward improved knowledge creation and sharing. Individually and collectively\, we aim to bring about a change in modern scholarly communications through the effective use of information technology. FORCE11 has grown from a small group of like-minded individuals into an open movement with clearly identified stakeholders associated with emerging technologies\, policies\, funding mechanisms and business models. While not disputing the expressive power of the written word to communicate complex ideas\, our foundational assumption is that scholarly communication by means of semantically enhanced media-rich digital publishing is likely to have a greater impact than communication in traditional print media or electronic facsimiles of printed works. However\, to date\, online versions of ‘scholarly outputs’ have tended to replicate print forms\, rather than exploit the additional functionalities afforded by the digital terrain. We believe that digital publishing of enhanced papers will enable more effective scholarly communication\, which will also broaden to include\, for example\, the publication of software tools\, and research communication by means of social media channels. We see FORCE11 as a starting point for a community that we hope will grow and be augmented by individual and collective efforts by the participants and others. The workshop will be organised under the aegis of the European Commission (EC\, DG CONNECT) and in association with the UbuntuNet Connect 2015 Conference. \nThis first Sci-GaIA workshop main objectives are to: \n\nStrengthen collaboration among African and European scientists;\nProvide a forum for discussions and debates on open science issues;\nEngage key local community stakeholders and reach African policy makers;\nPromote the uptake of Science Gateways and e-Infrastructures in Africa;\nSupport African Communities of Practice;\nCreate synergies with similar projects and initiatives.\n\n \nAt this scope\, the workshop will include the following sessions: \n \n\nAn opening session honored with the participation of high-level policy makers from Africa and Mozambique in particular and of representatives from UbuntuNet Alliance;\nTwo sessions with presentations related to Open Science and Open Data Infrastructure;\n“Bird-of-a-Feather” (BoF) sessions with thematic group discussions ;\nA session on the Sci-GaIA directions of development;\nA Workshop on the identification of possible synergies with similar projects like TANDEM\, MAGIC and AfricaConnect2.\n\n \nThe first day will include the above-mentioned sessions\, while the second day will propose tutorials and demonstrations on science gateways\, repositories and other applications. \n \nThis Open Science workshop is organised by UbuntuNet with the support of all Sci-GaIA project partners. \nFor information on the Sci-GaIA Project\, please visit www.sci-gaia.eu.

DESCRIPTION:MozFest is an annual celebration of the open Web. MozFest is about improving the open Web with new ideas and creations and sharing the open philosophy. There are several different sessions\, including one on Open Science. \nIn the “Science Space” session\, participants learn\, tinker\, explore and hack at the intersection of science and the Internet\, and learn how the Web can advance scientific work. Topics to be covered include citizen science\, open data\, open mapping and open research\, all the while learning news skills and tools. The Science Space is open to everyone including hobbyists\, researchers\, librarians\, data scientists\, developers and all others.

SUMMARY:Launch Event: Centro STEPS Alternativas Sustentables para AMERICA LATINA
DESCRIPTION:Centro STEPS América Latina is an interdisciplinary research group based at the Centro de Investigaciones para la Transformación (CENIT) which is associated with Tres de Febrero University (UNTREF). We work on issues of science\, technology and sustainable development in Latin America. We are part of a network of centres located in the UK\, USA\, China\, India\, Kenya and Sweden. We want to open up and help renew development agendas in Latin America\, based on the idea that their exist diverse development pathways. We draw on numerous experiences in the region that\, with varying levels of visibility and influence\, seek to promote alternative forms of change. Our research\, intervention and communication activities are aimed at supporting development pathways that integrate social inclusion\, environmental integrity and economic development. \nLaunch Event\n Centro STEPS Alternativas Sustentables para AMERICA LATINA\n Dates: November 5th and 6th 2015 \nOur launch event will create a space for debate and interaction between policy-makers\, academics\, civil society organizations\, and the public interested in the themes of sustainable development\, innovation and inclusion.\nThe objectives of the event are to:\n•  Promote discussion between different perspectives on development\, inclusion and sustainability.\n•  Incorporate sustainability as a dimension that cuts across other areas of the analysis of development.\n•  Discuss policies for sustainable development and explore new processes for formulating policy and intervention.\n•  Stimulate exchanges between actors with distinctive experiences and knowledge.\n•  Create a research and action network on alternative technologies for sustainable development from the perspective of the global south.\n•  Create channels for dialogue between research centres working on sustainable development in different regions of the world.\n•  Present STEPS América Latina\, its areas of research and the global network that it represents in the region. \nAreas of discussion\nThe event will discuss and integrate four themes of enormous relevance to policies for science\, technology and sustainable development in the region: open science\, innovation for social inclusion\, horizontal innovations for sustainability\, and natural resources and development. \nTentative workshop program available for download (in English): STEPS Launch event programme 5th-6th November \nFor more information (in Spanish)\, visit the STEPS website.
