DESCRIPTION:Prototyping Intervention! \n‘Prototyping Intervention!’ is a two-day workshop aimed to explore intervention as a form of research. The workshop seeks to bring together scientists\, artists\, engineers\, and designers (just to name a few popular candidates) to probe and discuss different takes on intervention\, and interrogate the relations between intervention and investigation. \nOrganizers: Judith Igelsböck\, Post/Doc Lab Engineering Responsibility\, Munich Center for Technology in Society (MCTS)\, Technical University of Munich (TUM)\nLocation: Technical University of Munich/Vorhoelzer Forum\nDates: 24-25 October 2017 \nConfirmed Keynote Speakers: Angus Cameron (University of Leicester)\, Friedrich Kirschner (Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Berlin\, Society for Cultural Optimism)\, Alex Wilkie (Goldsmith\, University of London)\, Teun Zuiderent-Jerak (Linköping University) \nScholars in science and technology studies (STS) have long called for opening up alternative modes of knowing and means of intervening. Pickering (2002)\, for instance\, promotes anti-disciplinary approaches to research\, arguing: “Perhaps it is time for the long march through the institutions: the laboratory (as creative scientists\, not just observers)\, politics\, art galleries and the ashram.” Yet\, it seems that most (STS) research remains distanced and detached\, focusing on the traditional genres of description and explanation. What happens\, if we – as researchers – commit to intervention? How to be an ‘immersed participant’ (Puig de la Bellacasa 2017) or an ‘entwined partisan’ (Thompson 2002)? Despite many calls for intervention\, more concrete guides of how to perform interventions are scarce. \nThis workshop is devoted to getting to know\, testing\, and discussing intervention practices (e.g. speculative research\, situated intervention\, social fiction\, imaginary economics) developed by inspiring people in and beyond STS. In an anti-disciplinary spirit\, the format will provide space for engaging with these intervention practices in an open-minded way\, encouraging participants to reimagine the roles and responsibilities of the social and cultural researcher. \nCall for participation and contribution: We invite people – from social science and beyond! – who share our interest in intervention as a form of (social scientific) research. Participants are encouraged to present their takes/ideas on intervention in short presentations or demos. Presentation is not a must. DESCRIPTION:IFIP WG 9.4\n\n\nOfficially designated as Working Group 9.4 of the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) the group has the following aims and scope. \nAims \n\nTo collect\, exchange and disseminate experiences of developing countries;\nTo develop a consciousness amongst professionals\, policy makers and public on social implications of computers in developing nations;\nTo develop criteria\, methods\, and guidelines for design and implementation of culturally adapted information systems;\nTo create a greater interest in professionals from industrialized countries to focus on issues of special relevance to developing countries through joint activities with other Technical Committees.\n\nScope \n\nNational computerization policy issues;\nCulturally adapted computer technology and information systems;\nRole of transnational corporations\, regional and international cooperation and self- sufficiency in informatics;\nSocial awareness of computers and computer literacy.\n\nWG 9.4 invites researchers and practitioners of developing and industrialized countries to join its activities. Most of the voting members are from developing countries\, either by residence or by origin\, but the WG is open for anyone seriously interested in our topic and willing to contribute in some way. There is no fee. Membership applications are considered once a year by our parent body within the IFIP\, Technical Committee 9 Computers and Society.

Theorizing the Web begins with the assumption that to talk about technology is also to discuss the self and the social world. Debate around digital social technologies too often fails to apply the many relevant literatures of social thought. We do not think “theorizing” is solely the domain of academia\, and we value clear and compelling arguments that avoid jargon. To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of CIARS/10th Anniversary of the “Decolonizing the Spirit”\, the “Decolonizing Conference” intends to bring together a range of international and local scholars\, activists\, and artists in order to reframe the way anti-racism and critical race studies are tied to questions of Indigeneity and decolonization. By reframing questions on Indigeneity and decolonization and asking new ones\, our intention is to foster a robust understanding of Indigeneity and decolonial praxis and to complicate ontological claims to the primacy of the Land as a starting point for all decolonial and anti-colonial engagements. DESCRIPTION:Conference Theme: Engaging with Participation\, Activism\, and Technologies \nFor some years now the CIRN Prato conference has focused on the intersection between Community Informatics (CI)\, Development Informatics (DI)\, and Community Archiving (CA). \nIn particular\, the 2015 conference focused on information and knowledge as socially constructed artifacts and the ways in which relations of information and knowledge production can reflect unequal distributions of power and privilege\, “whether manifested in gendered activity; the primacy given to formalized expertise or particular language codes; restricted access to information\, knowledge and production for those not in positions of institutional control; or the production of particular artifacts”. The 2015 conference also questioned the role of the academy in defining terminology and appropriate technologies of memory\, viewing this as a form of epistemological colonization on vulnerable groups. The conference sought ways of engaging more meaningfully with practitioners. \nIn 2016 the intention is to continue to explore and to expand on such issues\, bringing a stronger focus on more meaningful and equal partnerships with community\, civil society\, and NGO organisations around the world. \nThe overarching theme of the conference\, then\, will be the further development of Participatory Action Research (PAR) with regard to both theory and practice\, as a means of giving communities a stronger voice and especially women’s and other marginalized voices\, despite structural and cultural challenges. This will be explored in a variety of contexts\, with particular emphasis on the implications for archival\, community and development informatics. \nOne of our keynotes and participants will be Meghna Guhathakurta of Research Initiatives\, Bangladesh\, an internationally-recognised expert in PAR. Bangladesh has a long history of Participatory Action Research\, as part of its struggle for liberation and equality\, going back to the earliest days of PAR.  \nWithin that context\, a second theme of the conference will be to engage with activist archives\, such as theCentro di Documentazione di Pistoia (Italy) or the Interference Archive (USA)\, which see a more overtly political role for the archive\, and which tend to privilege use over collection. The approach of these archives to issues of local memory\, knowledge and power\, will also be of interest to people working in international development\, and provides an opportunity to work towards new modes of collaboration. \n\nWe also plan for a workshop on Participatory Action Research\, led by Oxfam Bangladesh. This will bring together both practical and theoretical insights on PAR from the North and Global South\, including work currently being undertaken in Bangladesh. \nTogether\, these themes provide a rich environment for re-examining theoretical and methodological approaches to working with community\, and the potential to address current concerns as expressed within Community and Development Informatics\, such as a lack of theoretical and methodological rigour \, and concern about the influence of dominant hegemonies whether they represent powerful sectoral interests\, as in Community Informatics\, or the Global North\, as in Development Informatics . Are their bodies of theory (for example\, post-colonial\, intersectional or critical theory) and practice that are intrinsically (better for the Global South) (or “more appropriate”)\, or do such theories and associated practices continue to serve academic\, rather than development interests? \nOur aim for the conference is for it to be an active community practice in\, and not just discussions about\, pluralism. We therefore encourage participation from a wide range of cultures\, races\, ethnicities\, religions\, socio-economic statuses\, gender identities\, disabilities\, and ages. We also encourage proposals for different ways of knowing and sharing. We especially seek to foster dialogue across difference rather than presentation and preservation of homogeneity\, when new ICTs in particular allow the existence and fruitful production of multiverses of information and knowledge. \nWe will also consider papers related to any aspect of Community Informatics\, Development Informatics or Community Archiving. \nWe are particularly interested in papers from researchers and practitioners that can address the challenges of locating community-based research within wider theoretical and practice frameworks.

DESCRIPTION:The collective voice and expertise of the international climate community is essential in shaping the international research agenda on the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. The World Climate Research Programme’s (WCRP) Core Project on Climate and Ocean – CLIVAR – invites the international climate community to review the state of the science\, to prioritize international research plans and to initiate new collaborations. In September 2016 CLIVAR will hold an Open Science Conference to engage the wider collection of scientists who work in this important area. \nThe objectives of the CLIVAR Open Science Conference are to \n\nReview progress toward improved understanding of the dynamics\, the interaction\, and the predictability of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system\nShape ideas to meet emerging ocean and climate science challenges\nEngage with the future generation of climate scientists\nIdentify key climate research and stakeholder issues\nDevelop and strengthen collaborations across nations\, disciplines and age groups and promote integrative studies\n\nIn addition to the main event\, an Early Career Scientists Symposium will take place on the weekends before and after the main Conference. \nFor regular updates\, join the CLIVAR email lists and follow CLIVAR’s Facebook and Twitter feeds.

DESCRIPTION:The local committee welcomes you to the joint 2016 4S/EASST conference\, held in Barcelona from August 31-September 3. We will collectively explore the ways in which science and technology are increasingly performed ‘by other means’\, in a variety of exploratory activities that include the articulation of collectives that do not fit with the traditional actors in science and technology\, or in ways that problematize the established value systems involved in the production of knowledge and technologies. \nScience & technology by other means: Exploring collectives\, spaces and futures.\nThe joint 2016 4S/EASST conference in Barcelona will be an opportunity to share reflections\, ideas\, findings and projects on a variety of aspects characterizing these alternative ways to do science and technology: (a) such as the fact that\, for instance\, all of these transformations usually take place in blurred everyday spaces and not in those enclosed established spaces for science and technology development\, such as laboratories or industrial R&D departments; (b) or\, in a similar way\, the fact that research and innovation processes are increasingly organised in networked\, horizontal assemblages where the traditional hierarchies in science are put into question and where science and technology are being co-produced by different actors in different\, sometimes antagonistic\, ways; (c) and\, finally\, the fact that traditional boundaries between the public and the private are no longer confined to state and for-profit actors\, care practices taking a preeminent presence in most of these everyday situations. \nFor More Information: http://www.sts2016bcn.org/ \n

SUMMARY:VIVO 2016 Conference
DESCRIPTION:The annual VIVO Conference brings together scholars\, scientists\, researchers\, developers\, publishers\, funding agencies\, research officers\, students\, institutional officials and those supporting the development of team science. Scientists across all disciplines learn from each other throughout various session types and networking activities at this three-day event. \nVIVO enables the discovery of researchers across institutions.  Participants in the network include institutions with local installations of VIVO or those with research discovery and profiling applications that can provide semantic web-compliant data.  The information accessible through VIVO’s search and browse capability will reside and be controlled locally\, within institutional VIVOs or other semantic web-compliant applications. \nVIVO is an open source semantic web application originally developed and implemented at Cornell. When installed and populated with researcher interests\, activities\, and accomplishments\, it enables the discovery of research and scholarship across disciplines at that institution and beyond. VIVO supports browsing and a search function which returns faceted results for rapid retrieval of desired information. Content in any local VIVO installation may be maintained manually\, brought into VIVO in automated ways from local systems of record\, such as HR\, grants\, course\, and faculty activity databases\, or from database providers such as publication aggregators and funding agencies.The rich semantically structured data in VIVO support and facilitate research discovery.
