SUMMARY:Sci-GaIA Open Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-GaIA Open Science Workshop will occur on November 18-19\, 2015 in Maputo\, Mozambique. The workshop will be organised under the aegis of the European Commission (EC\, DG CONNECT) and in association with the UbuntuNet Connect 2015 Conference. \nThis first Sci-GaIA workshop main objectives are to: \n\nStrengthen collaboration among African and European scientists;\nProvide a forum for discussions and debates on open science issues;\nEngage key local community stakeholders and reach African policy makers;\nPromote the uptake of Science Gateways and e-Infrastructures in Africa;\nSupport African Communities of Practice;\nCreate synergies with similar projects and initiatives.\n\n \nAt this scope\, the workshop will include the following sessions: \n \n\nAn opening session honored with the participation of high-level policy makers from Africa and Mozambique in particular and of representatives from UbuntuNet Alliance;\nTwo sessions with presentations related to Open Science and Open Data Infrastructure;\n“Bird-of-a-Feather” (BoF) sessions with thematic group discussions ;\nA session on the Sci-GaIA directions of development;\nA Workshop on the identification of possible synergies with similar projects like TANDEM\, MAGIC and AfricaConnect2.\n\n \nThe first day will include the above-mentioned sessions\, while the second day will propose tutorials and demonstrations on science gateways\, repositories and other applications. \n \nThis Open Science workshop is organised by UbuntuNet with the support of all Sci-GaIA project partners. \nFor information on the Sci-GaIA Project\, please visit www.sci-gaia.eu.

DESCRIPTION:MozFest is an annual celebration of the open Web. MozFest is about improving the open Web with new ideas and creations and sharing the open philosophy. There are several different sessions\, including one on Open Science. \nIn the “Science Space” session\, participants learn\, tinker\, explore and hack at the intersection of science and the Internet\, and learn how the Web can advance scientific work. Topics to be covered include citizen science\, open data\, open mapping and open research\, all the while learning news skills and tools. The Science Space is open to everyone including hobbyists\, researchers\, librarians\, data scientists\, developers and all others.

SUMMARY:Launch Event: Centro STEPS Alternativas Sustentables para AMERICA LATINA
DESCRIPTION:Centro STEPS América Latina is an interdisciplinary research group based at the Centro de Investigaciones para la Transformación (CENIT) which is associated with Tres de Febrero University (UNTREF). We work on issues of science\, technology and sustainable development in Latin America. We are part of a network of centres located in the UK\, USA\, China\, India\, Kenya and Sweden. We want to open up and help renew development agendas in Latin America\, based on the idea that their exist diverse development pathways. We draw on numerous experiences in the region that\, with varying levels of visibility and influence\, seek to promote alternative forms of change. Our research\, intervention and communication activities are aimed at supporting development pathways that integrate social inclusion\, environmental integrity and economic development. \nLaunch Event\n Centro STEPS Alternativas Sustentables para AMERICA LATINA\n Dates: November 5th and 6th 2015 \nOur launch event will create a space for debate and interaction between policy-makers\, academics\, civil society organizations\, and the public interested in the themes of sustainable development\, innovation and inclusion.\nThe objectives of the event are to:\n•  Promote discussion between different perspectives on development\, inclusion and sustainability.\n•  Incorporate sustainability as a dimension that cuts across other areas of the analysis of development.\n•  Discuss policies for sustainable development and explore new processes for formulating policy and intervention.\n•  Stimulate exchanges between actors with distinctive experiences and knowledge.\n•  Create a research and action network on alternative technologies for sustainable development from the perspective of the global south.\n•  Create channels for dialogue between research centres working on sustainable development in different regions of the world.\n•  Present STEPS América Latina\, its areas of research and the global network that it represents in the region. \nAreas of discussion\nThe event will discuss and integrate four themes of enormous relevance to policies for science\, technology and sustainable development in the region: open science\, innovation for social inclusion\, horizontal innovations for sustainability\, and natural resources and development. \nTentative workshop program available for download (in English): STEPS Launch event programme 5th-6th November \nFor more information (in Spanish)\, visit the STEPS website.
